A DIABOLIKAL FILM WEEKEND!

Screening 1960s Crime Comic Book Killers in Live Action Thrillers!

Diabolikal Film Weekend!

In answer to many in America and around the world who have been clamoring to see the sensational documentary THE DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL, their dark prayers have been answered! DSK, along with a few other rare films from the Euro Super-Kriminal genre will be screened on the web the week before Halloween!

Mark Friday, October 22 & Sunday October 24 on your kalendar and bookmark www.justin.tv/wolfcat7 on your web browser to see the fun and fearful films based on the 'dark' Italian comic books of the 1960s. The festivities last from 8 PM Eastern Standard Time and run late, late into the night! The screening also includes live chat, interaction with film and comics fans and useless trivia as the films are moderated by Mort Todd (Sadistik writer and producer of the DSK film).

The movies of mayhem include:

DANGER: DIABOLIK! (1968): In psychedelic swinging 60s, the killer Diabolik (John Phillip Law) and his gorgeous accomplice Eva (Marisa Mell) wreak havoc as they go on an outlandish crime spree!. Also featuring Adolfo (Thunderball) Celi as the villainous Valmont. Beautiful direction by the master Mario Bava and stirring soundtrack by Ennio Morricone.

Danger: Diabolik Movie Trailer narrated by Telly Savalas

KRIMINAL (1966): True to its noir comic roots, Kriminal (Glenn Saxson) dresses like a skeleton to steal diamond with suave style. Full of double crosses and excitement typical of the espionage films of the day. Colorfully directed by horror helmer Umberto Lenzi.

Animated opening sequence for Kriminal

SATANIK (1968): A withered old hag turns into a beautiful young woman (Magda Konopka) after drinking a youth formula and goes on a murder spree! Notorious for her striptease sequence in a costume inspired by Diabolik! Directed by Piero Vivarelli.

Diabolik-inspired Striptease from Satanik

KILINK: STRIP & KILL (1967): One of 13 amazing films produced in Turkey and based on the SADISTIK photo comics. Kilink battles 2 rival gangs and manages to turn one against the other. All of them are after a precious microfilm and a big foreign treasure. Directed by Yilmaz Atadeniz. This title is also being developed as a SADISTIK animated series.

Various Clips from Kilink: Strip & Kill!

Meet MR. KRIME in French & English!

Amidst the historical turmoil of May, 1968, a sinister figure rose to exploit the pandemonium of the student riots and strikes of Paris. Mr KRIME had a grand scheme to take control of the French government and spread his power throughout the continent and ultimately the world! How his plot was thwarted is still a mystery... Just as his animatronic servants were about to strike, they malfunctioned and Mr KRIME disappeared off the face of the Earth! Now, learning from the mistakes of his father, the son of KRIME has adopted the original's name and quest for world domination, aided by an army of technologically advanced humanitrons in the guise of world leaders and masters of media.

The King of Chaos / le roi du chaos

Flip Book in French & English! In dark contrast to America, Europe has a rich tradition of the super-villain as protagonist in popular culture. Beginning with Fantômas in France, an army of anti-heroes from the Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Mabuse to Diabolik and Sadistik, paraded around Europe in pulp, novels, film and comics. Following in those shadowy footsteps rises the spectre of Mr KRIME, the King of Chaos!

R.I.P. Rasta Artist Tennyson Smith

One of my favorite artists, and a true friend, Tennyson Smith, recently passed away. He was a fantastic oil painter, but that medium also may have led to his death by leukemia at a much too young age. Perhaps not well known by comic fans, he was the only Rastafari artist to work at Marvel Comics.

A great pleasure in my life was to produce the Bob Marley biography Tale of the Tuff Gong as Editor-in-Chief of the Marvel Music line. We worked closely with the Marley family and estate through Bob's Tuff Gong Records Art Director Neville Garrick, who had painted some of Bob's album covers. I chose veteran Marvel artist Gene Colan (Iron Man, Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula) to pencil the series because of his cinematic layouts, but we wanted the finishes to be true to Bob's Jamaican and Rasta roots.

Neville introduced me to Tennyson, or Jimmy as he was also known, and he was the perfect artist to do the completed art. He did full oil painting over Gene's layouts and gave them a superb look that only a native Jamaican could bring to the project.

We spent a lot of time together and Tennyson gave the books a true Rasta perspective and opened my mind to an intense philosophy. Due to Marvel's distribution ineptitude (the graphic novels were only shipped to comic shops and not record or book stores as intended) only the first two books, Iron and Lion, were released and the final chapter Zion was completed but never released. Ever since then I have been working with the Marley estate to get the three graphic novels packaged as one trade paperback... so far with no luck.

Tennyson painted the three covers himself (plus a cover for the planned paperback edition) along with an incredible 10 page supplement that was a history of Jamaica and the Rastafari. Hopefully this reverent comic will again see print and enjoy the wide audience it truly deserves.

While at Marvel I also commissioned Jimmy to paint some covers for some horror titles. He did some wild covers featuring the muck-encrusted Man Thing and the Zombie from the classic Bill Everett comic.

After I left Marvel, I worked with Tennyson as much as possible and helped him sell some artwork including pieces from a series of African warrior paintings.

Recently I used Jimmy as a voice artist for an animated series about Sadistik, The Diabolikal Super-Kriminal. Jimmy played a character named Vex, who helps the King of Crime procure weapons and gets involved in other shenanigans. His character was inspired by the Rasta 'suffarahs' who faced persecution in the 1960s when the series is set.

Over the last six months of his life he kept painting, though he had switched from oils to watercolor. I miss Jimmy an awful lot and the world is really missing out on a uniquely awesome talent and his potential. I hope we can get the Marley book back in print to serve as a permanent testimony to his amazing skills.

I know with Jah as his guide he is in a place where Bob is able to express his thanks and praise for Tennyson's contribution to the understanding of the Rasta.

R.I.P. Tennyson--- RASTAFARI!

Sadistik Doc Film Now on DVD with Satanik!

The outrageous documentary THE DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL has been released on DVD in Italy packaged with the cult film classic SATANIK!

Just released on the Cinekult series from CG Home Video, this double DVD set stars two of Italy's wildest super-criminals in wild action! THE DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL is directed by SS-Sunda and covers the controversial history of the Sadistik photo comics, interviewing the actors from the series along with filmmakers, comic book creators and cultural critics on the impact of the King of Crime!

Satanik (1968) is based on the Bunker/Magnus comic about a withered old hag who turns into a beautiful young woman after drinking a formula... beautiful but evil! The film, directed by Piero Vivarelli is infamous for the Diabolik-inspired strip tease performed by star Magda Konopka.

Extras include interviews with Piero Vivarelli, Lamberto Bava, Corrado Farina, Moreno Burattini, Luigi Corteggi, Maurizio Colombo, trailers, international poster gallery and the "Beware: Sadistik!" Music Video in high resolution. The DVDs are in PAL format and in Italian without English subtitles but this is the only way to see the film until an English NTSC DVD deal is negotiated and released.

The DVD set is available through many distributors at assorted prices, but here is ordering information from Bloodbuster (and here is the page in broken English).

K is for KILLING! 3 FREE FUMETTI FILMS in Rome Apr 15!

The DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL documentary about the history of SADISTIK headlines a free screening of films based on the dark comics of the 1960s on April 15th near the historic Trevi Fountain!

There will also be a panel about the comics-film connection moderated by Stefano Coccia and Pierpaolo De Sanctis with actors from the SADISTIK photo comics including Aldo Agliata (SADISTIK himself!), Giancarlo Borrelli son of SADISTIK director Rosario Borelli), Corrado Farina (director of BABA YAGA), Vito "Italiano Tarzano" Fornari, Gabriella Giorgelli, Piero Vivarelli (director of MISTER X and SATANIK).

(The following is translated from the Italian promotion. To read in Italian click HERE)

The principal heroes in tights of the 1960s have often passed from the monochromatic world of the nero fumetto (noir comics) to the multi-colored film screen, by masters like Mario Bava, whose Danger: Diabolik is a celebration of conceptual Pop Art, or from inventive filmmakers like Umberto Lenzi (Kriminal), Fernando Cerchio (Il marchio di Kriminal) or Piero Vivarelli (Satanik). The sadism of these prototypes is followed by the eroticism of the later 60s: from the joyful pacifism of Barbarella, carried to the screens by Roger Vadim in 1967, to the more morbid and spicy Isabella, shot by Sergio Corbucci in 1969. But the story of the Italian exchanges between cinema and comics, in big part, is still to be written, investigating the syntactic connections in the second half of the sixties, crossing transversally psychedelia, exoticism, technological fascination, psychoanalysis, feminism and aesthetic sadism. Those films include the imaginative kitsch of improbable heroes masked like Superargo, Fenomenal, Flashman or Fantabulous, which serve a special function.

In order to try to define the transition of these media hybrids, particularly the most wicked one of all, SADISTIK (known in Italy as Killing), exists the documentary of SS-Sunda. His film THE DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL, researches not only the origin of the photo comic directed by the actor Rosary Borelli, but interviews the actors almost forty year later (from the actresses Erna Shurer and Gabriella Giorgelli, well-known for their film roles, to actor who portrayed Killing, revealing his true identity at the end), and reconsts the historical and cultural context of its origins, including interviews with expert comics connoisseurs like Roman Scavolini and Corrado Farina. It is not accidental that the before the screening of SS-Sunda's documentary is the second film of Farina, Baba Yaga, adapted from the Valentina comic of Guido Crepax, which challenged the sexual taboos of the period. And to represent the world of the neri cinefumetti (noir comic films) in which THE DIABOLIKAL SUPER-KRIMINAL lurks, comes Mister X by Piero Vivarelli, one of the darker and nihilistic titles of the vein. Program curated by Stefano Coccia and Pierpaolo De Sanctis

The films will be screened Wednesday, 15 APRIL, 2009 at CINETECA NAZIONALE - CINEMA TREVI, Vicolo del Puttarello, 25 (zona Fontana di Trevi) Roma
tel. 06.6781206, salatrevi@fondazionecsc.it
